Five Feet Apart Review

Ok, so I acknowledge that I am far from the target audience for this film. I'm a seventeen-year-old guy who is single, but I randomly gave this film a watch. It was extremely cliched, but there's still some good elements to Five Feet Apart.

Haley Lu Richardson was by FAR the best part of this film. She delivered a fantastic performance, portraying a girl with cystic fibrosis who also has OCD. Her performance really carried the film along. I thought that Five Feet Apart had some decent cinematography, providing a couple of great shots. Cole Sprouse started the movie off with some subpar acting, but his performance elevated in the third act.

My main issue with Five Feet Apart is how forced all of the conflicts are. Many of the conflicts could have been resolved or avoided extremely easily, especially the main event in the third act. I understand that as a screenwriter, you need to cause drama in a film like this, but it felt like it was pretty lazy. This film was also extremely cliche. Haley Lu Richardson's character, while being portrayed well, was the standard "uptight girl". Cole Sprouse's character was the "misunderstood/mysterious guy". And Moisés Arias' character felt like a token gay character for the sake of diversity. The use of montages was also overused way too much. There were at least four different montage scenes with a really generic soundtrack that was extremely forgettable.

Overall, I'm sure this is an enjoyable movie for fans of the genre, but it was far from great.

4/10
